Buxus and Taxus Topiary Standards

Buxus microphylla

Buxus sempervirens
Buxus sempervirens makes a superb standard, due to the density of its foiliage. We have standards available from 50cm stem + 30cm head upwards.

Buxus sempervirens 'Rotundifloia'
This is ideal for a large garden as it is relatively quick growing. It has large glossy dark green leaves and makes a good standard, although it will not get as dense as Buxus sempervirens due to the size of its leaves.

Laurus nobilis Standards

Laurus nobilis
More commonly known as Bay is suitable for basic topiary shapes such as balls, cones and standards. Due to the size of the leaves they look better as larger pieces. We have standards available from: 45cm stem + 30cm head to 170cm stem + 80cm head.

Other Species Standards

Acca( feijoa) sellowiana
Commonly known as pineapple guava. Originally from South America, these frost hardy plants are grown for their cup shaped leaves and purple-red flowers but also have edible fruit in August/September. Available as a standard shape.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet'
Half standard. Japanese maple. Arching round head with finely cut dark purple leaves. makes a beautiful elegant standard with rich autumn colours. Requires a moist well drained neutral to acid loam, keep well watered in summer if grown in a container. Protect from cold easterl winds in winter.

 

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Viride'
Half standard. Japanese maple. Arching round head with finely cut soft green leaves. makes a beautiful elegant standard with rich autumn colours. Requires a moist well drained neutral to acid loam, keep well watered in summer if grown in a container. Protect from cold easterl winds in winter.
Arbutus unedo
Half standard.
Callistemon citrinus 'Splendens'
Available as a standard, this crimson bottlebrush has silky, pink red shoots, broad leaves and crimson flowers and originates from Australia. Extremely striking in appearance when in full flower.
Callistemon rugulosus
Bottle brush tree with masses of scarlet flowers in spring and early summer.Camellia japonica: Common camellia. This is a small tree with glossy dark-green leaves and single red flowers. At it's most beautiful in early spring.
Camelia japonica
common camelia. This is a small tree with glossy dark-green leaves and single red pink or variegated flowers. At its most beautiful in early spring. Requires an acid soil.
Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea'
Common name Indian bean tree, this is a spreading tree with yellow leaves(bronze when young) and white flowers followed by slender pods hence it's name.
Cryptomeria japonica globosa nana Japanese cedar. Evergreen, coniferous, fully hardy tree originally from China and Japan. No known pests or diseases.
  X Cupressocyparis leylandii
'Gold Rider'

Available as a standard, spiral or triple ball, this plant has striking yellow foliage. Fully hardy.
Cupressus arizonica
Glaucous, blue-grey leaves arranged in dense sprays. We can provide these as triple balls, spirals or standards.
Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest' Monterey cypress. Coniferous tree, narrowly conical with dense, rich golden yellow foliage. Available as a standard or spiral.
Eleagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge'
Available as a standard. Very striking, evergreen, has leaves with dark green centres and yellow margins.
Euonymus japonicus 'Albomarginatus'
Has oval, mid green leaves with broad, white margins.
Euonymus japonicus 'President Gaultier' Another variegated yellow-green standard. Frost hardy.
Hibiscus syriacus 'Blue Bird'
Also known as 'Oiseau Bleu', this standard has bright blue flowers with small red centres, very pretty.

Ilex x altaclerensis 'Golden King'

Ilex aquifolium
Common or English holly.Standard with glossy, dark-green leaves and red or sometimes yellow or orange berries. Very traditional good-looking tree.
Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata'
Also known as 'Argentea Variegata', this is a female tree with green stems and large, spiny leaves with wide, white margins. Leaves are often purple-pink when young. Abundant red berries.
Ilex aquifolium 'J.C.van Tol'
Female tree with dark, shining leaves, almost spineless with huge crops of bright red berries. Self-pollinating. Available as a ball or standard.
Ilex aquifolium 'Silver Queen'
Striking holly with black-purple, young shoots and dark-green leaves bordered creamy-white. New leaves often pinkish in colour. A misnomer as it is a male form.
Ilex crenata
Box leaved holly. Available as a standard or small ball shape or complex cloud. Evergreen, also useful for low hedges, minature plantings or bonsai and cloud pruning.

Leptospermum scoparium
New Zealand tea tree. Topiary standard. Lance shaped, aromatic, mid-dark green leaves often silver in appearance when young. White or pink tinged flowers in profusion in late spring/ early summer.

  Ligustrum delavayanum
Evergreen standard with oval or oblong dark-green leaves. White flowers in early summer followed by blue-black fruit.
Ligustrum lucidum 'Excelsum Superbum' Common name 'Chinese privet'. Conical, evergreen tree with yellow-margined, bright green leaves. White flowers in late summer and early autumn, followed by blue-black fruit.
Magnolia grandiflora 'Gallisoniensis' Available as a cone or standard, flowers in spring and summer with beautiful lemon-scented white flowers.
Magnolia stellata 'Susan'
Available as a standard, this plant has mid-green leaves and in the spring is covered with goblet-shaped, fragrant flowers that are a purple-red colour.
Magnolia x soulangeana
Another standard with goblet-shaped flowers that vary in colour from deep rose-pink to violet-purple or pure white in mid or late spring.
Morus alba 'Pendula'
Standard that is particularly suitable for small gardens. Weeping white mulberry with bright green leaves that turn yellow in the autumn.
Olea europaea
Olive tree. Slow-growing, evergreen tree with tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in summer followed by edible green fruit(olives) that ripen to black.
 

Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin'
Fully hardy small tree with leathery, dark-green leaves with bright red young foliage. Particularly stunning in late spring/early summer.

Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii Nigra' Rounded, deciduous tree with dark-purple leaves, red when young and pink flowers. Available as a standard.
Prunus lusitanica 'Angustifolia'
Tree commonly known as 'Portuguese laurel'. White flowers in early summer followed by cherry-like fruit.
Prunus laurocerasus
Cherry laurel. Glossy leaves, fragrant white flowers in spring followed by cherry-like fruits, hence it's name. Standard.
Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Lukyen' Glossy, narrow, dark-green pointy leaves, fragrant white flowers in mid and late spring. Often flowers again the autumn.
Prunus persica
Peach tree. Spreading, deciduous tree with slender green leaves, has bowl-shaped, pink or red flowers in late spring, followed by edible, red-blushed yellow fruit. Standard.
Quercus ilex
Commonly known as 'Holm Oak'. Rounded, evergreen tree with smooth bark and variable leaves. Bears acorns.
Rosmarinus officinalis
Small standard Rosemary. Frost-hardy. Dense, bushy, aromatic plant with purple-blue to white flowers from mid-spring to early summer.
Syringa x persica
Persian lilac. Available as a standard form, this plant has tiny, lance-shaped leaves. In late spring, bears lots of fragrant purple flowers.
Viburnum burkwoodii 'Anne Russell' Evergreen standard with tubular, fragrant white flowers that open from pink buds in late spring.
Viburnum x carlcephalum
Rounded, deciduous standard with heart-shaped leaves that turn red in the autumn. Tubular, trumpet-shaped, fragrant white flowers in late spring.
  Viburnum carlesii
Deciduous standard with dark-green leaves that turn red in the autumn. Mid-late spring, pink buds open totubular, very fragrant, white or pink flushed white flowers, followed by red fruit ripening to black.
Viburnum carlesii 'Aurora'
As above, but with red buds, opening to pink flowers.
Viburnum 'Eskimo'
Semi-evergreen standard producing glossy, dark-green leaves. Mid to late spring, pink-tinged cream buds open to pure-white flowers.
Viburnum tinus
Evergreen standard with dark-green leaves that bears small white flowers over a long period in late winter and spring followed by dark-blue/ black fruit.
Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price'
Similar to Viburnum tinus, but has pink flower buds.
Wisteria sinensis 'Alba'
Chinese wisteria. Vigorous climber with pea-like, fragrant white flowers in spring and early summer.
